Catchmark privacy policy
Catchmark is a private fishing journal for iOS and Android. This policy explains what information the app handles, where it goes, how long it is kept and what you can do about it. It describes the app as it works today.
Who is responsible
Catchmark is provided by Martin Erlander, a sole trader (enskild näringsidkare) in Sweden. Martin Erlander is the data controller for the personal data described here. “Catchmark” is the app’s name and “RlandR” is a brand name. Neither is a separate company. In this policy, “we” and “us” mean Martin Erlander.
Privacy questions and requests: support@rlandr.com
In short
- Catchmark has no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and we do not sell or rent your data.
- Your journal is stored on your phone. While you are signed in and online, a copy of your journal entries (not your photos) is sent to our hosted database so it is kept with your account.
- Photos stay on your phone. Catchmark does not upload them.
- You can delete your account and its hosted data from inside the app.
Your account
You need an account to open the journal. Accounts are provided by our authentication service, Clerk. Clerk handles your email address and the sign-in details you use, and keeps your account record. It also processes technical information about sign-in requests, such as IP address and device or browser details, to provide sign-in and protect accounts. Clerk gives each account an identifier, which Catchmark uses to link your journal and its hosted copy to your account.
Signing out keeps your journal on your phone and locks it until the same account signs in again.
Your journal
The journal holds what you enter or choose to record, for example:
- catches: species, date and time, length, weight, released or kept, depth, technique, water temperature, wind, and notes;
- where a catch was made: its exact GPS position and its accuracy, a water name and locality, and saved places;
- lures: brand, model, category, pattern, size, weight, colours, notes and favourites, plus the lure details copied onto each catch;
- photos you attach to catches or lures;
- app settings such as units and appearance.
All of this is stored in Catchmark’s own storage on your phone.
Location
Catchmark asks for location access only while you are using the app. When you log a catch, it reads your current position to record where the catch was made, and you can move the pin before saving. Catchmark does not track your location in the background and does not record where you go. The exact coordinates are saved with the catch and, like the rest of the entry, are included in the hosted copy described below. You can log catches without allowing location access.
Photos
If you allow it, Catchmark uses the camera or your photo library so you can attach photos. It saves a copy of each chosen photo in its own storage on your phone. Catchmark does not upload photo files anywhere. The hosted copy of your journal records only that a catch has photos (an identifier, order and date for each), not the images.
Hosted copy of your journal
While you are signed in and connected, Catchmark sends the changes you make to your journal to a database hosted by Neon, in the EU (Frankfurt, Germany). This includes catch details with exact GPS positions and notes, lures, places and photo records as listed above, each linked to your account identifier. It does not include photo files or app settings.
Sending is one way. Catchmark does not currently download or restore your journal from this copy. Access to hosted journal data is restricted to your own account.
When you delete a single catch, lure or place in the app, the hosted copy is marked as deleted rather than erased. Hosted entries are erased when you delete your account.
Maps
Maps use the public OpenFreeMap service. To draw the map, your phone requests map images for the area you are viewing directly from OpenFreeMap’s servers. As with any web request, those servers receive your IP address and the map areas requested. Catchmark does not send your catches, notes, photos or account details to OpenFreeMap.
Exports and sharing
Settings → Your data → Export catches creates a CSV or GPX file of your catches on your phone and opens your phone’s share sheet. The export includes your catch details and positions. Where the file goes is your choice, for example another app, a message, email or cloud storage. Once shared, that copy is handled by the destination you chose, and Catchmark cannot change or delete it.
Device backups
iPhone: Catchmark’s journal and photos are part of the app’s data, which iOS includes in iCloud or computer backups if you have backups turned on. Those backups are managed by Apple and by you, not by us.
Android: Catchmark is currently configured so that its journal and photos are not included in Android’s cloud backup or device-to-device transfer.
What we do not do
- No advertising and no advertising identifiers.
- No analytics, tracking or profiling tools in the app.
- No selling, renting or trading of personal data.
- No sharing of your data except with the service providers named in this policy, or where the law requires it.
Service providers
- Clerk: account sign-in and account records. Clerk may process this data outside the EU, including in the United States.
- Neon: hosted database for the synced copy of your journal, in the EU (Frankfurt).
- OpenFreeMap: map images requested directly by your phone.
- Our email provider, when you write to support.
Why we use your data
We use this data to provide Catchmark: to sign you in, to keep your journal with your account, to show maps and to answer support requests. The legal basis is performing our agreement with you to provide the app you signed up for. Keeping accounts and hosted data secure, and handling support, are also in our legitimate interests. Location, camera and photo access are used only when you allow them, and you can withdraw that permission at any time in your phone’s settings.
How long data is kept
- On your phone: until you delete it, delete your account in the app, or remove the app.
- Account and hosted journal: for as long as your account exists. Deleting your account erases them, as described below.
- Support email: up to 12 months after the matter is closed, unless a documented legal or security reason requires keeping it longer.
- After account deletion: to stop deleted data being uploaded again, for example from another phone that is still signed in, the hosted database keeps a pseudonymous deletion record. It contains a one-way code derived from your account identifier and no email address or journal content. It keeps new uploads for that account blocked. It is removed only once we can confirm the deletion is complete, so it can remain indefinitely.
- Database backups: our database provider keeps a restore history for its configured retention period. Before database maintenance we may also make recovery copies of the hosted database. These have no automatic expiry: they are kept until they are no longer needed for recovery and are then removed manually. Data you have deleted can remain in the restore history and in those copies until then.
Deleting your account and data
In the app, go to Settings → Your data → Sync → Account & sync → Delete account. This needs an internet connection. It:
- erases the hosted copy of your journal;
- erases the journal, photos and export files stored by Catchmark on that phone;
- deletes your Clerk account.
Deletion cannot be undone. It cannot reach data outside Catchmark’s control: journals and photos on other phones where you used Catchmark, device backups, and files you exported or shared. Delete those separately.
Your rights
Under data protection law, including the GDPR, you can ask to access, correct, delete or receive a copy of your personal data, and to restrict or object to its use. Most of your data is already in your hands on your phone, and Export catches gives you a copy. To delete your account and its hosted data, use Delete account in the app, as described above. For other privacy requests and questions, email support@rlandr.com. You can also complain to the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten, IMY) or to the data protection authority where you live.
Security
Catchmark talks to its services over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Hosted journal data can be read and written only for the account it belongs to, and sign-in tokens are kept in your phone’s secure storage. On your phone, the journal and photos are protected by your phone’s own security, such as your screen lock. No system is perfectly secure, so please keep your phone and account protected.
Changes to this policy
If Catchmark’s handling of data changes, we will update this page and its effective date before the change takes effect.
